SPECIMEN COLLECTION

Cytogenetic Sample Collection

Peripheral Blood

  • Collect 3-5ml of blood in a sodium heparin tube by routine venipuncture

  •  Label the tube with the patient name and UH number

  • Transport the specimen at room temperature or store in the refrigerator for delivery delays greater than 24 hours

  • Samples must be accompanied by a completed Cytogenetics requisition form

Bone Marrow Aspirate

  • Collect 2-5ml of bone marrow aspirate in a sodium heparin tube

  • Label the tube with the patient name and UH number

  • Transport the specimen at room temperature or store in the refrigerator for delivery delays greater than 24 hours

  • Samples must be accompanied by a completed Cytogenetics requisition form

Products of Conception

  • Collect  ~2-4mm2 of villi, placental tissue, umbilical tissue, fascia, or fetal organ tissue

  • Place the sample in cytogenetic transport media (or sterile saline if media is not available) and label the container with the patient name and UH number

  • Solutions containing formalin are not acceptable for collecting cytogenetic samples

  • Deliver the sample with a completed Cytogenetics requisition form to the Cytogenetics lab as soon as possible

  • Samples may be refrigerated for delivery delays greater than 24 hours

  • Bone, fat tissue, and muscle tissue are not acceptable samples sources

Tissue Samples (Skin Biopsy, Solid Tumors, Lymph Nodes)

  • Collect a 2mm punch or ~2-4mm2 tissue section

  • Place the sample in cytogenetic transport media (or sterile saline if media is not available) and label the container with the patient name and UH number

  • Solutions containing formalin are not acceptable for collecting cytogenetic samples

  • Deliver the sample with a completed Cytogenetics requisition form to the Cytogenetics lab as soon as possible

  • Samples may be refrigerated for delivery delays greater than 24 hours

Amniotic Fluid

  • Collect 10-30ml of amniotic fluid into sterile syringes (needles removed) or tubes

  • Label the sample with the patient name and UH number

  • Deliver the sample with a completed Cytogenetics requisition form to the Cytogenetics lab as soon as possible

  • Samples may be refrigerated for delivery delays greater than 24 hour
