Fecal Specimens

Common Collection Errors | AutoCyte Prep | Biopsy Tissue | Blood Cultures | Coagulation | CSF | Cytogenetics | Cytopathology | Fecal | Pap Smears | Throat Culture | Urine Collection | Viral | Wound Sample

General Considerations

  • Keep stool specimens cool.   Follow collection and storage instructions for specific test.

  • Do not use toilet paper to collect stool.

Collection

  • Pass stool directly into a sterile, wide mouth, leak-proof container with a tight fitting lid.

  • Pass stool into a clean, dry container and transfer to collection/transport container.

  • Record start date and time and completion date and time for timed collections.

  • For specimens for ova and parasite examination transfer fecal specimen to Parapak preservation containers.
