PLATELETPHERESIS (007-0113)  "PLATELETPHERESIS"

Synonyms: Plateletpheresis Concentrate; Platelets, apheresis; Platelet Donation, Multiple Unit; Thrombocytapheresis

CPT 4 Code: 36520

Order Mnemonic: BILL PLM

Order Includes: ABO, Rh, and antibody screen.  Single donor platelet units contain a minimum of 3.0 x 1011 platelets per donation (equal to six units of random donor platelets; they may be contaminated with 5 mL of red cells).

Patient Preparation: Patient must have a wristband for checking against component container label prior to administration.  A recent (i.e., within the same 24-hour period) platelet count should be completed before platelets are ordered.  Only one completed requisition is required for each plateletpheresis requested. 

Storage Instructions: Store between 20°C to 24°C (approximately room temperature) on rotator.

Causes for rejection: Request will be questioned if patient has a platelet count within hemostatic range.  Click here for Transfusion Criteria.

Availability: Samples are accepted 24 hours per day; Blood Bank John Sealy Annex., Room 1.180

Turnaround Time: 30 minutes

Special Instructions: Type and Screen required during current hospital visit.  Patient must meet acceptable transfusion criteria.  One hour post transfusion platelet count to be drawn on patient.  All requests must include requesting physician’s name and ID number, patient's name, UH #, patient location, clinical information/diagnosis.  Request form must be filled out completely and all information must be legible.

Volume: 7 mL blood

Minimum Volume: 3 mL blood
