LEUKOCYTE REDUCED PLATELETS (007-0158)  "LEUKOCYTE REDUCED PLATELETS"  

Synonyms: Filtered Platelets, Leuko-poor Platelets

CPT 4 Code: P9017

Order Mnemonic: BILL LPP

Request Includes: Platelet concentrate consists of the platelets separated from whole blood collected from a single whole blood donation, suspended in approximately 55 mL of plasma and contains at least 5.5 x 1010 platelets.  Filtration reduces the number of Leukocytes.

Storage Instructions: Storage is at room temperature with agitation for up to 5 days.  Pooled platelets must be transfused within 4 hours after pooling.  A recent (i.e., within the same 24-hour period) platelet count should be completed before platelets are ordered and 1 hour after platelets are transfused. 

Causes for Rejection: Request will be questioned if patient has a platelet count within the hemostatic range and/or no clinical indication for leukoreduced platelets.

Availability: Samples are accepted 24 hours per day; Blood Bank lab, McCullough 5.102

Turnaround Time: 1 hour

Special Instructions: Type and Screen required during current hospital visit.  Must meet acceptable transfusion criteria.  Do not refrigerate platelet concentrate.  All requests must include requesting physician’s name and ID number, patient's name, UH #, patient location, clinical information/diagnosis.  Request form must be filled out completely and all information must be legible.

Minimum Volume: 3 mL blood

Container: Lavender-topped tube (EDTA)
