Collection: Routine venipuncture; draw samples at least four hours after drug ingestion and again at 12 hours if indicated.

Storage Instructions: Whole blood may be stored at room temperature for short period of time. Centrifuge the specimen to separate serum from red cells within 4 hours of collection and refrigerate.

Causes for Rejection: Blood drawn in SST/gel separator tubes.

Availability: Samples are received 24 hrs per day at Sample Management, Room 5.136 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: Routine: 24 hours; STAT: 1 hour

Specimen: Blood

Volume: 3 mL blood

Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL serum

Container: Red-topped tube. Do not use SST/gel separator tubes

Reference Ranges: Therapeutic Range: 10-30 mcg/mL.

Significant Values:  Potential Toxicity: >200 mcg/mL at 4 hours and > 50 mcg/mL at 12 hours post ingestion.
