Collection: Routine venipuncture

Storage Instructions: Centrifuge the specimen to separate serum from red cells within 2 hours of collection. Protect from light and store refrigerated at 2-8 C.

Causes for Rejection: Hemolysis

Availability: Samples are received 24 hrs per day at Sample Management, Room 5.136 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: Routine: 4 hours; STAT: 1 hour.

Special Instructions: Protect from light. May use aluminum foil or amber colored tube to protect from light during transit.

Specimen: Blood

Volume: 7 mL blood

Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL serum

Container: SST (gel barrier) or red-topped tube

Reference Ranges: Newborn - Adult : 0.1-1.1 mg/dL (Note: Test is Not Available for patients between the age of birth to 14 days old, request BU/BC Bilirubin)

Test Method: Colorimetric
