Collection: Routine venipuncture

Storage Instructions: Centrifuge the specimen to separate serum from red cells within 2 hours of collection. Protect from light and store refrigerated at 2 - 8° C.

Causes for Rejection: Hemolysis

Availability: Samples are received 24 hourrs per day at Sample Management, Room 5.136 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: Routine: 4 hours; STAT: 1 hour

Special Instructions: Protect from light. May use aluminum foil or amber colored tube to protect from light during transit.

Specimen: Blood

Volume: 7 mL blood

Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL serum

Container: SST (gel barrier) or red-topped tube

Reference Ranges: Newborn - Adult: 0.0-1.1 mg/dL

Critical Values: Newborn - 5 days: > 3.0 mg/dL (cord blood)
Newborn - Adult: > 18.0 mg/dL

Test Method: Colorimetric
