Collection: Routine venipuncture

Storage Instructions: Centrifuge the specimen to separate serum from cells within 2 hours of collection. Protect the sample from light. Refrigerate serum at 2-8°C.

Causes for Rejection: Hemolysis, improperly labeled specimen, specimen QNS, specimen not separated from cells

Availability: Samples are received 24 hours per day at Sample Management, Room 5.136 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: Routine: 4 hours; STAT: 1 hour.

Special Instructions: Protect from light. May use aluminum foil or amber colored tube to protect from light during transit.

Specimen: Blood

Volume: 7 mL blood

Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL serum

Container: SST (gel barrier), red-topped, or microtainer tube.

Reference Ranges: Newborn - Adult: 0.0-0.3 mg/dL
