Clinical Chemistry (HVL Room 5.134 McCullough) ISCU, and PICU

Turnaround Time:

STAT: 10 minutes; CODE: 5 minutes

Specimen Requirements:

Collect: Heparinized blood gas capillary tube. Specimen must be collected without introducing air spaces. Sample should be capped tightly on both ends. 

Test Includes: pH, pCO2, pO2, Bicarbonate (HCO3-)

Storage/Transport:  Place specimen on ice and immediately transport to the lab (within 15 minutes after collection)

Causes for Rejection: Clots or air spaces/bubbles in capillary tube, improperly labeled specimen, and QNS specimen

Clinical Information:

If applicable, state clinical information that is required to be provided with specimen.

Reference Range:

By report (reports may vary based on instrumentation, patient age and sex)

Note:

Requisition must indicate requesting physician's name, diagnosis code, date & time drawn, type of sample (arterial, venous or capillary), FiO2 and ventillary support type, and patient's temperature. Deliver specimen to the lab immediately (within 15 minutes) after collection.

When ordering tests for which Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement will be sought, physicians should only order tests that are medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of the patient.  Components of the organ or disease panels may be ordered individually.  The diagnostic information must substantiate all tests ordered and must be in the form of an ICD-9 code or its verbal equivalent.
