Request Form: Special Chemistry form 2

Collection: Routine venipuncture; draw trough levels immediately before next dose.

Storage Instructions: Samples must be centrifuged within 4 hours of collection. Refrigerate serum at 2 - 8C.

Causes for Rejection: Blood collected in a SST/gel barrier tube or any anticoagulated tube.

Availability: Samples are received 24 hours per day.

Turnaround Time: Routine: 24 hours; STAT: 1 hour

Specimen: Blood

Volume: 3 mL blood

Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL serum

Container: Red-topped tube. Do not collect in SST/serum separator tube.

Reference Ranges: Therapeutic Range: 8-12 mcg/mL. Patients receiving carbamazepine together with other antiepileptic drugs may exhibit a therapeutic response between 4-8 mcg/mL.

Critical Values: Potential toxicity: 12 mcg/mL. Toxicity for patients receiving carbamazepine concurrently with other antiepileptic drugs ranges from 9 to 12 mcg/mL.
