Patient Preparation: Draw before a meal to avoid excess lipids in blood.

Collection: Routine venipuncture

Storage Instructions: Centrifuge and remove serum from red cells, FREEZE serum.

Causes for Rejection: Gross hemolysis or lipemia.

Availability: Samples can be delivered to Sample Management, 5.136 McCullough, 24 hours per day.

Turnaround Time: Test performed once a week, Monday – Friday.

Special Instructions: The test can be ordered only once per inpatient admission and only once per month for outpatients. Additional tests must have the approval of the laboratory director.

Specimen: Blood

Volume: 7 mL

Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL of serum

Container: Red-topped tube or SST.

Reference Ranges: Prepubertal, 50-995 ng/mL; adult male or female, 650-3400 ng/mL
