Collection: Routine venipuncture

Storage Instructions: Centrifuge the specimen, remove the serum from red cells and refrigerate serum at 2-8°C for up to 24 hrs. If >24 hrs, freeze samples at –20°C.

Causes for Rejection: Gross hemolysis or lipemia

Availability: Samples are received 24 hours per day in Sample Management, Room 5.136 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: 3 Days. Samples are routinely run on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Special Instructions: Stat requests can be completed in 2 hours with laboratory director approval.

Specimen: Blood

Volume: 7 mL

Minimum Volume: 5 mL

Container: red-topped tube or SST

Reference Range: The following ranges are expected values, not clinically used normal ranges. Weeks of Gestation: Expected Range:

      1. Weeks 0.10 – 1.0 ng/mL
      2. Weeks 0.30 – 1.5 ng/mL
      3. Weeks 0.40 – 2.0 ng/mL
      4. Weeks 0.60 – 2.6 ng/mL
      5. Weeks 0.70 – 3.0 ng/mL
      6. Weeks 1.00 – 3.5 ng/mL
      7. Weeks 1.50 – 4.0 ng/mL
