Turnaround Time:

 Routine: 8 hours; ASAP: 4 hours; STAT: 1 hour

Specimen Requirements: Collect: Cleaning of puncture site should be performed with a non-alcoholic solution. Arterial, venous, or capillary whole blood properly collected in a closed system is the preferred specimen.  Collect 7mL of blood in gray-topped tube (NaF and potassium oxalate); Acceptable: SST and red-topped tube. (Min.: 3mL of blood).  

Specimen Preparation: Centrifuge specimen within 2 hours of collection.  Do not open tube

Storage/Transport: Immediately deliver unopened tube to Sample Management.  Do not open tube.

Stability: Room temperature for ≤ 48 hours, refrigerated for ≤ 2 weeks or frozen for ≤ 1 month.

Causes for Rejection:  Open tube, tube not completely filled and not tightly stoppered, incomplete and/or incorrect sample identification, improper storage/transport.

When ordering tests for which Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement will be sought, physicians should only order tests that are medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of the patient.  Components of the organ or disease panels may be ordered individually.  The diagnostic information must substantiate all tests ordered and must be in the form of an ICD-9 code or its verbal equivalent.
