 Routine: 24 hours; STAT: 1 hour; ER: 45 min

Specimen Requirements:

Collect: Routine venipuncture. Cleaning of puncture site should be performed with a non-alcoholic solution. Arterial, venous, or capillary whole blood properly collected in a closed system is the preferred specimen.  Preferred: gray-topped tube (NaF and potassium oxalate); Acceptable: red-topped tube

Storage/Transport: Blood: Grey-topped tube - The container should have sufficient NaF to make 1% with the submitted blood. Store at room temperature or refrigerate. Red-topped tube - Centrifuge the specimen and immediately deliver unopened tube to the laboratory testing site. Do not open the tube. Blood stored without NaF is stable at room temperature (25°C) for 48 hours or refrigerated (5°C) for about two weeks. Other sample types: refrigerate.

When ordering tests for which Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement will be sought, physicians should only order tests that are medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of the patient.  Components of the organ or disease panels may be ordered individually.  The diagnostic information must substantiate all tests ordered and must be in the form of an ICD-9 code or its verbal equivalent.
