Collection: Routine venipuncture; peak or trough levels may be used to monitor therapy. Collect the sample immediately before the dose for a trough level and 2-4 hours after the dose for a peak level.

Storage Instructions: Store blood at 2-8°C. Centrifuge the specimen within 4 hours of collection, remove the serum from the red cells and refrigerate.

Causes for Rejection: Blood drawn in gel separator tubes

Availability: Samples are received 24 hours per day at Sample Management, Room 5.136 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: Routine: 24 hours; STAT: 1 hour

Specimen: Blood

Volume: 3 mL blood

Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL serum

Container: Red-topped tube. Do not use gel separator tube.

Reference Ranges: Therapeutic Range: 40-100 mcg/mL

Critical Values: Potential Toxicity: > 150 mcg/mL
