Test Mnemonic:

 GLU for serum or plasma. AC GLUC for whole blood.

 End Point Colorimetric, oxidase

Turnaround Time:

 Routine: 4 hours; STAT: 1 hour; Whole Blood to Critical Care: 20 minutes.

Specimen Requirements:

Collect: Routine venipuncture. Do not draw specimen from an arm receiving intravenous transfusion.  Heparinized syringe or green-topped (heparin) vacutainer tube (preferred specimen is anticoagulated with sodium or lithium heparin) for whole blood; SST (gel-barrier), gray-topped tube, or red-topped tube for serum or plasma.

Storage/Transport:  Whole Blood: Samples sent to Blood Gases should be transported within 15 minutes. Serum/Plasma: Centrifuge the specimen to separate the serum from the red cells within 2 hours of collection and refrigerate. Specimens drawn in gray-topped tubes need not be separated if delivered to the laboratory within 24 hours of collection.

Causes for Rejection: Gross hemolysis, improperly labeled specimen, sample QNS, sample not processed properly

If applicable, state clinical information that is required to be provided with specimen.

Reference Range:

By report (reports may vary based on instrumentation, patient age and sex)

Note:

  Indicate on slip and announce to lab personnel if sample is a CODE; sample will receive priority analysis.

When ordering tests for which Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement will be sought, physicians should only order tests that are medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of the patient.  Components of the organ or disease panels may be ordered individually.  The diagnostic information must substantiate all tests ordered and must be in the form of an ICD-9 code or its verbal equivalent.
