GLUCOSE, serum, plasma, or whole blood (087-0039)

CPT 4 Code: 82947 (Limited Coverage Test (NCD)

Test Order Mnemonic: GLU for serum or plasma. AC GLUC for whole blood.

Lab: Clinical Chemistry

Request Form: Routine Chemistry Form 1 or Blood Gas Lab Slip

Collection: Routine venipuncture. Do not draw specimen from an arm receiving intravenous transfusion.

Storage Instructions: Whole Blood: Samples sent to Blood Gases should be transported within 15 minutes. Serum/Plasma: Centrifuge the specimen to separate the serum from the red cells within 2 hours of collection and refrigerate. Specimens drawn in gray-topped tubes need not be separated if delivered to the laboratory within 8 hours of collection.

Causes for Rejection: Gross hemolysis, improperly labeled specimen, sample QNS, sample not processed properly

Availability: Samples are accepted 24 hours per day at Sample Management, Room 5.136 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: Routine: 4 hours; STAT: 1 hour; Whole Blood to Critical Care: 20 minutes.

Special Instructions: Indicate on slip and announce to lab personnel if sample is a CODE; sample will receive priority analysis.

Specimen: Blood

Volume: 1 mL for whole blood analysis or 3 mL serum or plasma

Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL (0.3 for Neonates) for whole blood analysis or 0.5 mL serum or plasma

Container: Heparinized syringe or green-topped (heparin) vacutainer tube (preferred specimen is anticoagulated with sodium or lithium heparin) for whole blood; SST (gel-barrier), gray-topped tube, or red-topped tube for serum or plasma.

Reference Ranges: Glucose, neonate (up to 30 days): 40-110 mg/dL; Glucose, adult (infant to adult): 70-110 mg/dL

Critical Values: Adults: <50 or >450 mg/dL; Neonates: <30 or >300 mg/dL

Test Method: End Point Colorimetric, oxidase
