Patient Preparation: At least 12 hours fasting.

Collection: Routine venipuncture

Storage Instructions: Centrifuge the specimen to separate serum from cells within 2 hours of collection. Refrigerate at 2-8°C.

Causes for Rejection: Improperly labeled specimen, specimen QNS, patient not fasting.

Availability: Samples are received 24 hours per day at Sample Management, 5.136McCullough.

Turnaround Time: Routine: 4 hours, Stat: 1 hour.

Specimen: Blood

Volume: 7 mL blood

Minimum Volume: 1.5 mL serum

Container: SST (gel barrier) or red-topped tube

Reference Ranges: Male - >35 mg/dL; Female - >45 mg/dL

Test Method: Magnetic-Dex Sulfate, Colorimetric
