Collection: Routine venipuncture

Storage Instructions: Centrifuge the specimen, remove plasma from the cells and store at 2-8° C if the specimen is not delivered to the lab within 4 hours after collection.

Causes for Rejection: Hemolysis

Availability: Samples are received 24 hours per day at Sample Management, 5.136 McCullough.

Turnaround Time Routine: 24 hours, STAT: 1 hour

Specimen: Blood

Volume: 7 mL blood

Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL plasma

Container: Preferred: Green-topped (lithium heparin) tube; Acceptable: red-topped tube, but the serum results may be elevated by the clotting process

Reference Ranges: <5 mg/dL
