 Test performed Monday-Friday from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm

Collect:  Routine venipuncture.  Red-topped tube or SST.

Storage/Transport: Collect and store on ice for up to 24 hours. Centrifuge the specimen and remove serum from cells within 2 hours of collection. Refrigerate serum at 2-8°C for up to 5 days. More than 5 days, freeze serum at –20°C.

Causes for Rejection:  Severely hemolyzed or lipemic sample, serum not separated from red cells within 2 hours of collection, improper sample handling and storage. See special instructions.

If applicable, state clinical information that is required to be provided with specimen.

By report (reports may vary based on instrumentation, patient age and sex)

 The test can be order only once per admission for inpatients and once per month for outpatients. Additional requests must have the approval of the laboratory director.

When ordering tests for which Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement will be sought, physicians should only order tests that are medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of the patient.  Components of the organ or disease panels may be ordered individually.  The diagnostic information must substantiate all tests ordered and must be in the form of an ICD-9 code or its verbal equivalent.
