IMMUNOELECTOPHORESIS, SERUM AND URINE (087-0242)

Methodology:

  Immunoelectrophoresis

Performed:

 Clinical Chemistry

Turnaround Time:

  Routine: 48 hours; test is performed Monday - Friday

Specimen Requirements:

 Test Includes: Serum: Total Protein, Albumin, IgG, IgA, IgM, High Resolution electrophoresis, Interpretation and immunofixation as needed.  Urine: Qualitative Protein, High Resolution Electrophoresis, interpretation and Immunofixation as needed.

Collect:  Routine venipuncture; Urine: 24 hour collection or random collection.  SST (gel barrier) preferred;  red-topped tube acceptable; Urine: 3 liter brown plastic jug with no preservative for 24-hour sample or sterile 4 oz plastic container with screw cap for random sample.

Storage/Transport: Prefer prompt delivery.  Blood - seperate serum from cells and refrigerate.  Urine - refrigerate.

Causes for Rejection: Gross hemolysis, urine sample collected with any preservative

Reference Range:

By report (reports may vary based on instrumentation, patient age and sex)

Note:

  Blood sample is always require in conjunctin with Urine requrest and must be collected within 24 hours of each other. Record 24-hour urine volume on request formif aliquot is sent to laboratory.

When ordering tests for which Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement will be sought, physicians should only order tests that are medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of the patient.  Components of the organ or disease panels may be ordered individually.  The diagnostic information must substantiate all tests ordered and must be in the form of an ICD-9 code or its verbal equivalent.
