IMMUNOELECTOPHORESIS, SERUM AND URINE (087-0242)

Methodology:

  Immunoelectrophoresis

Performed:

 Special Chemistry: Monday – Friday: 7:00am – 3:30 pm

Turnaround Time:

  Routine: 48 hours; test is performed Monday - Friday

Specimen Requirements:

Test Includes: Serum: Total Protein, Albumin, IgG, IgA, IgM, High Resolution electrophoresis, Interpretation and immunofixation as needed.  Urine: Qualitative Protein, High Resolution Electrophoresis, interpretation and Immunofixation as needed.

Collect:  Routine venipuncture:  7 mL of blood in SST (gel barrier) preferred; red-topped tube acceptable (Min.: 3mL).  Urine: A 2 Liter 24-hour urine collection container without preservatives, containing total urine contents voided within 24 hours or 10 mL random urine specimen collected in a sterile evacuated urine specimen tube or container with no preservative.     

Specimen Preparation: Allow specimen to clot completely at room temperature. Centrifuge to separate serum from cells within 2 hours of collection. Transfer serum from collection tube to labeled plastic transport tube. 

Storage/Transport:  Delivered to Sample Management within 2 hours of collection.    

Stability: Refrigerated for ≤ 72 hours; Frozen for ≤ 6 months.  (Avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles).  

Causes for Rejection:  Incomplete and/or incorrect sample identification, improper storage/transport, and gross hemolysis or lipemia.

By report (reports may vary based on instrumentation, patient age and sex)

Note:

  Blood sample is always require in conjunctin with Urine requrest and must be collected within 24 hours of each other. Record 24-hour urine volume on request formif aliquot is sent to laboratory.  Not available on week-end.
