Test Order Mnemonic: INSULIN

Lab: Clinical Chemistry

Request Form: Special Chemistry Form 2

Collection: Routine venipuncture; AM collection is preferred.

Storage Instructions: SST (Serum Separator Tube): Centrifuge and refrigerate until delivered to lab within 24 hours. If delayed more than 24 hours, remove serum and freeze. Red-topped tube or Green-topped tube (heparinized): Centrifuge, remove serum from cells, refrigerate until delivered to lab within 24 hours. If delayed more than 24 hours, freeze serum @ -20°C.

Causes for Rejection: Improper collection, improperly labeled, incomplete information. See special instructions.

Availability: Samples are received 24 hours per day at Sample Management, Room 5.136 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: 24 - 48 hours; test performed Monday – Thursday.

Special Instructions: Timed samples must be labeled properly as to time collected (i.e., fasting, 30 min, 1 hour, etc.).

Specimen: Blood

Volume: 7 mL blood preferred

Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL serum

Container Preferred: 7 mL SST (gel barrier); Acceptable:7 or 10 mL red-topped tube or green-topped tube (see storage Instructions).

Reference Range: 6-27 µIU/mL

Test Method: Chemiluminescence
