Patient Preparation: Patient should
be fasting for 10-12 hours.
Collection: Routine venipuncture; blood should be
collected in the morning
Storage Instructions: Centrifuge the specimen to
separate serum from red cells within 4 hours of collection. Refrigerate the specimen
at 2-8°C.
Causes for Rejection: Gross hemolysis, improperly
labelled specimen, specimen QNS
Availability: Samples are received 24 hours per day
at Sample Management, Room 5.138, McCullough.
Turnaround Time: Routine: 24-48 hours; STAT: 1 hour.

Volume: 3 mL blood
Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL plasma
Container: SST (gel barrier) or red-topped tube
Reference Ranges: 50-160 mgl/dL
Critical Values: Potential Toxicity: >350 mgld/L
