Turnaround Time:

Routine: 8 hours; ASAP: 4 hours; STAT: 1 hour
Specimen Requirements: Collect:  Random urine.  Collect urine in a clean, dry container (4.5 oz) that is free of preservatives.  

Specimen Preparation:  Refrigerate specimen within 1 hour of collection.   

Storage/Transport:  Delivered to Sample Management within 1 hours of collection.   

Stability: Refrigerated ≤ 24 hours.

Storage/Transport:  Should be brought to the lab immediately after voiding.  

Causes for Rejection: Specimen contaminated with feces, specimen collected in container with a preservative, specimen received in the lab more than 24 hours after collection, incomplete and/or incorrect sample identification, and improper storage/transport.

When ordering tests for which Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement will be sought, physicians should only order tests that are medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of the patient.  Components of the organ or disease panels may be ordered individually.  The diagnostic information must substantiate all tests ordered and must be in the form of an ICD-9 code or its verbal equivalent.
