Test Includes: Ketone (Acetoacetate) and b-hyroxybuterate (if ketone is positive)

Collection: Routine venipuncture

Storage Instructions: DO NOT OPEN the vacutainer tube. Centrifuge the specimen and refrigerate until sent to the lab.

Causes for Rejection: Hemolysis and/or an opened tube

Availability: Samples are received 24 hours per day at Sample Management, Room 5.136 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: Routine: 24 hours; STAT: 1 hour

Specimen: Blood

Volume: 7 mL blood

Minimum Volume: 3 mL blood

Container: SST (gel barrier tube) or red-topped tube

Reference Ranges: Ketone = negative; b-hydroxybuterate = <0.4 mmol/L
