Specimen Requirements:

Test Includes: Volume and hours of collection, concentration, and amount excreted

Collect: 24-hour Urine - Discard early morning specimen; start timing from this point. Collect all urine for the next 24 hours, including sample voided at the same time the next morning. Note the time of the last collection on the request form.  2 liter brown plastic jug or red top tube without any additives.  Preferred: entire collection; Acceptable: aliquot, if volume is measured and written on the request slip

Storage/Transport: 2-8°C during collection and until delivered to laboratory

Causes for Rejection: Collection with preservative, improper labeling

Clinical Information:

When ordering tests for which Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement will be sought, physicians should only order tests that are medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of the patient.  Components of the organ or disease panels may be ordered individually.  The diagnostic information must substantiate all tests ordered and must be in the form of an ICD-9 code or its verbal equivalent.
