PREGNANCY TEST, QUALITATIVE (Serum or Urine) (087-0607)

 Routine: 24 hours; STAT: 1 hour

Specimen Requirements:

Collect: Random urine ; first morning urine is optimal because it generally contains the highest concentrations of hCG. Venipuncture. Disposable, 4.5 oz specimen container or 6 mL SST vacutainer

Storage/Transport:  If the urine specimen cannot be delivered to the lab promptly, store in the smallest possible plastic container at 2-8°C in the refrigerator. Large containers (especially glass) are to be avoided because hCG sticks to the surface of containers. If the analysis is not performed within 72 hours, freeze.

Causes for Rejection: Hemolyse, QNS

When ordering tests for which Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement will be sought, physicians should only order tests that are medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of the patient.  Components of the organ or disease panels may be ordered individually.  The diagnostic information must substantiate all tests ordered and must be in the form of an ICD-9 code or its verbal equivalent.
