Turnaround Time:

 24-48 hours; test performed Monday – Friday.
Specimen Requirements: Patient Preparation:  Overnight fast recommended but not required.

Collect:  Routine venipuncture; AM collection preferred. SST (gel barrier) or 7 mL red-topped tube

Storage/Transport:  Red-topped Tube: Centrifuge, remove serum from cells, refrigerate serum until delivered to lab; if delivery is delayed by more than 24 hours, freeze serum.

Causes for Rejection:  Gross hemolysis or lipemia and blood collected in any anticoagulated tube. See special instructions. See special instructions.

By report (reports may vary based on instrumentation, patient age and sex)
Note:

  The test can be ordered only once per inpatient admission or once per month for outpatients. Additional requests must have the approval of the laboratory director.

When ordering tests for which Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement will be sought, physicians should only order tests that are medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of the patient.  Components of the organ or disease panels may be ordered individually.  The diagnostic information must substantiate all tests ordered and must be in the form of an ICD-9 code or its verbal equivalent.
