Specimen Requirements:

Collect:  Routine venipuncture; patient should be recumbent. Tourniquet application should be minimal.  Heparinized syringe or green-topped (heparin) vacutainer tube for plasma; SST vacutainer or red topped tube for serum

Storage/Transport: Red-topped tube: Centrifuge the specimen, remove the serum from the red cells and refrigerate. Green-topped tube: Centrifuge the specimen, remove the plasma from the red cells and refrigerate. SST (gel barrier tube): Centrifuge the specimen, refrigerate at 2-8°C.

Causes for Rejection:  Hemolysis

When ordering tests for which Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement will be sought, physicians should only order tests that are medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of the patient.  Components of the organ or disease panels may be ordered individually.  The diagnostic information must substantiate all tests ordered and must be in the form of an ICD-9 code or its verbal equivalent.
