Lab: Clinical Chemistry

Request Form: Write in on Routine Chemistry - Urine or Feces

Patient Preparation: Discontinue medications so that the sample is free from drug metabolites.

Collection: Random urine or fecal specimen

Storage Instructions: If not brought to the lab promptly, refrigerate specimen at 2-8°C.

Causes for rejection: See special instructions.

Availability: Samples are received 24 hours per day at Sample Management, 5.136 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: Routine: 24 hours; STAT: 1 hour

Special Instructions: The test can be ordered only once per inpatient admission or once per month for outpatients. Additional requests must have the approval of the laboratory director.

Specimen: Feces or urine

Volume: 10 mL, feces or urine

Minimum Volume: 1 mL, feces or urine

Container: Disposable, 4.5 oz specimen container or plain tube.

Reference Ranges: Urine: Negative Feces: Adult – Negative - Trace; Newborn to1 year – Negative.

Critical Values: Urine: Newborn to 1 year: Positive
