Collection: Routine venipuncture

Storage Instructions: Centrifuge the specimen to separate serum from cells within 2 hours of collection. Store at 2-8C.

Causes for Rejection: Gross hemolysis

Availability: Samples are received 24 hours per day at Sample Management, Room 5.136 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: Routine: 4 hours; STAT: 1 hour

Volume: 7 mL blood

Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL serum

Container: SST (gel barrier) or red-topped

Reference Ranges: Newborn - 1 year: 132-145 mmol/l; 1 year - Adult: 135-145 mmol/l

Critical Values: < 120 mmol/l or > 160 mmol/l
