Collection: Random or 24-hour collection

Storage Instructions: Timed collections must be kept cool during collection. Refrigerate at 2-8°C or keep on ice (no preservative) until delivered to the laboratory.

Causes for Rejection: Collected with acid preservative

Availability: Samples are received 24 hours per day at Sample Management, Room 5.136 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: Routine: 4 hours (7 am - 11 pm); STAT: 1 hour

Special Instructions: Timed collections must have start date and time, finish date and time, and total volume on request form.

Specimen: Urine

Volume: 5 mL urine (random or aliquot of timed collection)

Minimum Volume: 1 mL urine (random or aliquot of timed collection)

Container: Plain tube or plastic cup with tight-fitting lid

Reference Ranges: Newborn - Adult: 250-750 mg/24 hours

Test Method: Colorimetric
