Turnaround Time:

Routine: 24 hours. Test is performed 7 am - 3:30 pm Monday through Friday.

Specimen Requirements: Patient Preparation: Best to collect blood before a meal

Collect: Routine venipuncture. Preferred: SST (gel barrier tube) or red-topped tube; Acceptable: Green-topped tube (heparinized plasma)

Storage/Transport: Prompt delivery to the lab is preferred. If delivery is delayed, centrifuge the specimen within two hours of collection, transfer serum/plasma to a storage tube, and refrigerate at 2° to 8°C. If analysis cannot be performed within 24 hours, store serum/plasma frozen at -15° to -20°C.

Causes for Rejection:  Gross hemolysis, improperly labeled specimen, and QNS specimen

By report (Reports may vary based on instrumentation, patient age and gender)

Note:

CA-125 is often elevated in active epithelial and other ovarian cancers. It may be elevated in benign disorders such as pericarditis, cirrhosis, severe endometriosis, first trimester of pregnancy, and ovarian cysts.

When ordering tests for which Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement will be sought, physicians should only order tests that are medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of the patient.  Components of the organ or disease panels may be ordered individually.  The diagnostic information must substantiate all tests ordered and must be in the form of an ICD-9 code or its verbal equivalent.
