CALCIUM, IONIZED, whole blood (087-0435)

Test Mnemonic:

AC CA2+

Methodology:

ISE

Performed:

Clinical Chemistry

Turnaround Time:

Routine: 10 minutes; CODE: 5 minutes

Specimen Requirements:

Collect: Syringe or vacutainer containing balanced/titrated heparin. Care should be taken to avoid drawing air into the syringe. Remove any bubbles from the syringe immediately. Venous blood should be collected with the tourniquet in place. Do not release the tourniquet before collecting the ionized calcium sample. Immediately place the specimen on ice.  "DO NOT OPEN the specimen."

Storage/Transport: Place the specimen on ice and immediately transport to the lab (within 15 minutes after collection)

Causes for Rejection: Clotted, inappropriately labeled, or QNS specimen; improper anticoagulant; blood leaking from syringe; large air space or bubbles in syringe; syringes with needles attached; and not delivered to the lab within allotted time (Do you want to add "Any tube that has been opened and exposed to air")

Clinical Information:

If applicable, state clinical information that is required to be provided with specimen.

Reference Range:

By report (Reports may vary based on instrumentation as well as patient age and gender)

Note:

The sample must be collected and kept anaerobic. Do not use anticoagulants containing citrate, EDTA, fluoride, or oxalate. Venoject green-stoppered tubes are also not acceptable. Heparin sources other than balanced/titrated heparin may influence the ionized calcium significantly and unpredictably.

CPT 4 Code:

82330

When ordering tests for which Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement will be sought, physicians should only order tests that are medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of the patient.  Components of the organ or disease panels may be ordered individually.  The diagnostic information must substantiate all tests ordered and must be in the form of an ICD-9 code or its verbal equivalent.
