Turnaround Time:

Routine: 24 - 48 hours. Test is performed on Monday through Friday.

Specimen Requirements:

Collect: Routine venipuncture. Red topped tube. AM collection preferred

Storage/Transport: Centrifuge the specimen within two hours of collection, transfer serum to a storage tube, and refrigerate at 2° to 8°C. If analysis cannot be performed within 24 hours, store serum frozen at -15° to -20°C.

Causes for Rejection: Blood collected in an anticoagulated tube, improperly labeled specimen, and QNS specimen

By report (reports may vary based on instrumentation, patient age and sex)

Note:

The test can be ordered only once per patient admission for inpatients and once per month for outpatients. Additional requests must have the approval of the laboratory director.  Due to change in instrumentation, only SERUM can be used to run this test.

When ordering tests for which Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement will be sought, physicians should only order tests that are medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of the patient.  Components of the organ or disease panels may be ordered individually.  The diagnostic information must substantiate all tests ordered and must be in the form of an ICD-9 code or its verbal equivalent.
