Collection: Iontophoresis

Causes for Rejection: QNS, bandage covering collection site becomes non-occlusive during collection period.

Availability: Collection by Chemistry Laboratory Technologist extension 23197, on a scheduled basis: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday at 9am or 1pm

Turnaround Time: Collection TAT within 48 hours (inpatients); analysis TAT is same day of collection

Special Instructions: Test must be scheduled with the Clinical Chemistry Laboratory for proper collection.

Specimen: Sweat specimen after pilocarpine iontophoresis (chemical stimulation)

Volume: Entire collection

Minimum Volume: 15 µL

Reference Ranges: Normal range is less than 40 mEq Cl/L sweat. Patients with results above 40 should have repeat collections. Value greater than 80 mEq Cl/L sweat is an abnormal value and is compatible with Cystic Fibrosis and other diseases known to be associated with high Sweat Chloride result.
