Collection: Routine venipuncture.

Storage Instructions: Centrifuge the specimen, remove serum from cells. Store serum at 2-8 °C for up to 24 hours. If delivery to the lab is delayed for more than 24 hours, freeze serum at –20C.

Causes for Rejection: Hemolysis, improperly labeled and blood collected in any anticoagulated tube.

Availability: Samples are received 24 hours per day at Sample Management, Room 5.136 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: Routine: 24 hours; STAT: 4 hours

Volume: 7 mL

Minimum Volume: 3 mL blood, 0.6 mL serum

Container: SST (gel barrier) or Red-topped tube

Reference Range: Males: 1-18 mIU/mL; Females (normally menstruating): Follicular Phase, 3-10 mIU/mL; Midcycle Peak, 3-34 mIU/mL; Luteal Phase, 1-12 mIU/mL; Postmenopausal, 23-116 mIU/mL.
