Patient Preparation: Patient should be fasting for 10-12 hours.

Collection: Routine venipuncture; blood should be collected in the morning.

Storage Instructions: Centrifuge the specimen to separate serum from red cells within 4 hours of collection. Refrigerate the specimen at 2-8°C.

Causes for Rejection: Gross hemolysis, improperly labeled specimen, specimen QNS.

Availability: Samples are received 24 hrs per day at Sample Management, Room 5.136 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: Routine: 24 hours; STAT: 1 hour

Specimen: Blood

Volume: 7 mL blood

Minimum Volume: 1.0 mL serum

Container: SST (gel barrier) or red-topped tube

Reference Ranges: 250 – 410 ug/dL
