BRONCHIAL WASHING FLUID - CYTOLOGY

Synonyms: Bronchial Alveolar Lavage (BAL) Fluid

Applies To: Detection of abnormal cells, malignant cells, and infectious agents

Lab: Cytopathology Laboratory

Request Form: Cytopathology Requisition Form

Collection: See Storage and Special Instructions

Storage Instructions: Preferred: fresh specimens sent to the laboratory immediately; Acceptable: specimens refrigerated 1-2 days. Call the laboratory if more than 2 days old.

Causes for Rejection: Delayed delivery of fresh specimens, incomplete and/or improper labeling, insufficient pertinent clinical history.  See the Cytopathology specimens acceptance and rejection policy.

Availability: Specimens are accepted Monday-Friday from 8 AM-5 PM (except holidays) at Room 9.300, John Sealy Hospital.

Turnaround Time: Same day if specimens are submitted before 4 PM.

Special Instructions: Pertinent clinical information must be included on request form.

Specimen: Bronchial washing fluid or bronchial alveolar lavage fluid

Volume: 2-50 mL

Minimum Volume: 2 mL

Container: Well-constructed container with secure lid and sealed plastic bag
