ENDOCERVICAL ASPIRATION - CYTOLOGY

Synonyms: Pap Smear - Cytology

Applies To: Detection of abnormal cells and malignant cells

Lab: Cytopathology Laboratory

Request Form: Cytopathology Requisition Form

Collection: See Storage Instructions

Storage Instructions: Slides should be fixed in 95% alcohol or sprayed with cytology fixative immediately.

Causes for Rejection: Incomplete and/or improper labeling, insufficient pertinent clinical history, specimen not fixed on slide immediately. See Cytopathology specimens acceptance and rejection policy and the Medicare compliance instruction.

Availability: Specimens are accepted Monday-Friday from 8 AM-5 PM (except holidays) at Room 9.300, John Sealy Annex.

Turnaround Time: Routine: 3-5 working days; STAT: same day

Special Instructions: Pertinent clinical information must be included on request form. Slides must be labeled in pencil (frosted end) with patient's last name and unit history number.

Specimen: Endocervical aspiration slide

Volume:1-2 slides

Container: Heavy cardboard microslide mailer or pap smear bottle
