ORGAN ASPIRATION FNA - CYTOLOGY

Applies To: Detection of abnormal cells and malignant cells

Lab: Cytopathology Laboratory

Request Form: Cytopathology Requisition Form

Collection: Call the Cytopathology Lab for scheduling FNA procedure at 409-772-8435 or 409-772-2872. Call the Cytopathology Lab for scheduling at least one hour before the expected FNA procedure (see Scheduling of FNA policy).

Storage Instructions: Slides should be fixed in 95% alcohol immediately.

Causes for Rejection: Incomplete and/or improper labeling, insufficient pertinent clinical history, specimen on slide not fixed immediately.  See Cytopathology specimens acceptance and rejection policy.

Availability: Specimens are accepted Monday-Friday from 8 AM-5 PM (except holidays) at Room 9.140, John Sealy Hospital.

Turnaround Time: Within 24 hours unless special studies are required

Special Instructions: See Scheduling of FNA policy.  For FNA slides prepared by physicians not requiring of the presence of the Cytopathology Team, slides must be labeled in pencil (frosted end) with patient's full name and unit history number.

Specimen: Organ aspiration FNA, any site
