URINE - CYTOLOGY

Synonyms: Bladder - Cytology, urine

Applies To: Detection of abnormal cells and malignant cells

Lab: Cytopathology Laboratory

Request Form: Cytopathology Requisition Form

Collection: See Storage and Special Instructions

Storage Instructions: Cells degenerate quickly in urine. Fresh specimens should be sent immediately to the Cytopathology Laboratory. Call the laboratory if a delay of more than 2 hours is anticipated.

Causes for Rejection: Delayed delivery of fresh specimens, incomplete and/or improper labeling, insufficient pertinent clinical history. See Cytopathology specimens acceptance and rejection policy.

Availability:Specimens are accepted Monday-Friday from 8 AM-5 PM (except holidays) at Room 9.300, John Sealy Annex.

Turnaround Time: Routine: 1-3 working days; STAT: same day

Special Instructions: Pertinent clinical information must be included on request form.

Specimen: Urine

Volume: 50-100 mL

Minimum Volume: 5 mL

Container: Well-constructed container with secure lid and sealed plastic bag
