TISSUE CULTURE AND CHROMOSOME ANALYSIS, Skin Biopsy of Solid Tumor (087-0267)

CPT 4 Code:    Limited Coverage Test (NCD) and LCD

Test Order Mnemonic:

Synonyms: Karyotyping, Chromosome Studies, Chromosome Analysis, Cytogenetic Analysis

Test Includes: Cell culture and chromosome analysis

Applies To: Spontaneous abortions, IUFD, suspected chromosome syndromes, solid tumors

Lab: Clinical Cytogenetics Laboratory, Children's Hospital, Room 3.350

Request Form: Cytogenetics Requisition form

Collection: 2 mm skin biopsy appropriately obtained, fetal skin or organ tissue, placenta, solid tumor biopsy

Storage Instructions: Biopsy material should be delivered as soon as possible. It should not be frozen or exposed to temperature extremes or stored for extended periods of time.

Causes for Rejection: Visible microbial contamination, missing or incomplete paperwork, unlabeled tubes, insufficient sample, improper or extended storage of the sample, collection in formalin, frozen sample.

Availability: Samples are received 8 AM - 4:30 PM, Monday-Friday, at Clinical Cytogenetics Laboratory, Children's Hospital, Room 3.350.

Turnaround Time: 21 days

Special Instructions: Deliver sample as soon as possible to cytogenetics lab.   Samples collected after hours or on weekends should be refrigerated and delivered the next working day.

Specimen: Skin, internal organ, products of conception

Volume: 2 mm punch

Container: Capped tube containing cytogenetic transport media or sterile saline delivered in leak- and puncture-resistant container. Media tubes can be obtained from the cytogenetics laboratory

Reference Ranges: 46, XX or 46, XY
