BONE MARROW ASPIRATE: (089-3172) (089-8313)

Clinical Indication:

Assessment of cellularity and morphologic abnormalities present in bone marrow aspirate smears.

Test Mnemonic:

Buffycoat; ironbm

Methodology:

Push smear, crush smear, trailing smear and buffy coat smears are prepared from EDTA anticoagulated specimen and stained with Wright-Giemsa and Prussian Blue stains.

Performed:

Monday - Friday 8:00 AM - 11: amPM (Specimens from Hem/Onc Clinic accepted until 4:00 PM with prior notification.)

Turnaround Time:

 48 hours

Specimen Requirements:

Collect: Equipment for the procedure is available in Hematopathology Lab, Room 5.142 McCullough.  Equipment will not be released after 11:00 AM.  Specimen must be delivered to Hematopathology Lab within 30 minutes of completion of procedure. If sample is inadequate, iron stains will not be performed.  Laboratory personnel will provide bedside collection assistance for scheduled procedures Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 11:00AM as staffing levels allow.

Specimen Container: EDTA (Lavender-top tube supplied in tray) , Sodium Heparin (Green top)

 

Volume:4 mL

 

Minimum Volume: 1.5 mL

Storage/Transport: Specimen must be delivered to Hematopathology Lab within 30 minutes of completion of procedure.

Stability: Ambient: 24 hours.
 

Causes for Rejection: Receipt in lab after 2:00PM weekdays, insufficient identification, inappropriate anticoagulants. Specimens not accepted on weekends or holidays.  Refrigerated or Frozen specimens.

When ordering tests for which Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement will be sought, physicians should only order tests that are medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of the patient.  Components of the organ or disease panels may be ordered individually.  The diagnostic information must substantiate all tests ordered and must be in the form of an ICD-9 code or its verbal equivalent.
