BONE MARROW BIOPSY: (88305)

Clinical Indication:

Bone marrow core biopsy removed for diagnostic determination.

Methodology:

Gross and microscopic examination with diagnosis

Performed:

Deliver to Hematopathology, Room 5.142, McCullough Building, Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-2:00 PM (except holidays).

Turnaround Time:

 48 hours (see Special Instructions)

Specimen Requirements:

Collect: Bone marrow core biopsy collected in 10% buffered formalin or RPMI preservative (Obtained in Hematopathology).

Specimen Preparation: Equipment for the procedure is available in Hematopathology Lab, Room 5.142 McCullough.  Equipment will not be released after 11:00 AM.  Specimen must be delivered to Hematopathology Lab within 30 minutes of completion of procedure. If sample is inadequate, iron stains will not be performed.  Laboratory personnel will  provide  bedside collection assistance for scheduled procedures Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 11:00AM as staffing levels allow.

Storage/Transport: Room Temperature in 10% buffered formalin or RPMI preservative (Obtained in Hematopathology).

Stability: Ambient: 24 hours in 10% buffered formalin or RPMI preservative

Causes for Rejection: Incomplete requisition, insufficient identification, improper handling, receipt in lab after 2:00 PM without prior consent.

When ordering tests for which Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement will be sought, physicians should only order tests that are medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of the patient.  Components of the organ or disease panels may be ordered individually.  The diagnostic information must substantiate all tests ordered and must be in the form of an ICD-9 code or its verbal equivalent.
