Clinical Indication:

Aids in monitoring the lymphocyte subsets of patients with immune deficiency diseases, autoimmune disease or immune reactions.

Test Mnemonic:

CD4CD8; CD4

Methodology:

Flow Cytometry

Performed:

Samples are accepted in Sample Management, 5.134, and 5.142 McCullough,
Tuesday - Friday (8AM-5PM). Friday cut-off time is noon.

Turnaround Time:

 48 Hours

Specimen Requirements:

Collect: Routine venipuncture.  EDTA (Lavender-top tube); pediatric tube acceptable. Specimens that require collection after the noon cut off on Fridays, may be collected in Streck BCT collection tubes.

Volume:   4 ml

Minimum Volume:   1 ml

Storage/Transport: Store at room temperature (18-22°C). DO NOT REFRIGERATE.

Stability: 24 Hours at Room Temperature.

Causes for Rejection:  Clotted, QNS, hemolysis, identification error, specimen refrigerated, specimens received on weekend and holidays, specimen received after noon cut off on Fridays.

When ordering tests for which Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement will be sought, physicians should only order tests that are medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of the patient.  Components of the organ or disease panels may be ordered individually.  The diagnostic information must substantiate all tests ordered and must be in the form of an ICD-9 code or its verbal equivalent.
