BODY FLUID CELL COUNT: (089-0014)

Clinical Indication:

Examination of the numerical and/or morphological findings in the body fluid are useful in the diagnosis of disease states, such as meningitis, hemorrhage, malignancy, inflammation, viral, bacterial, and parasitic infections

Test Mnemonic:

BFCOUNT

Methodology:

Manual Hemocytometry;and Manual Microscopy for hypocellular specimens.  For highly cellular samples, the WBC is measured using flow cytometry.  The RBC is measured using electronic resistance detection enhanced by hydrodynamic focusing.

Performed:

 Samples are accepted 24 hours per day at Sample Management, 5.136 McCullough

Turnaround Time:

 STAT: 1 hour;  Routine: 4 hours

Specimen Requirements:

Collect:   Sterile tube; EDTA (Lavender-top tube) if viscous or bloody

Specimen Preparation: Synovial, serous or other bloody fluids should be collected in EDTA tube to prevent clotting.  Specify site explicitly.

Specimen: CSF, ventricular, pleural, pericardial, synovial, miscellaneous body fluids (call laboratory)

Volume: 2 mL

Minimum Volume: 1 mL

Storage/Transport: For best results, deliver to lab within 1 hour. 

Stability: 2 hours after collection

Causes for Rejection: QNS, old specimen, identification error

By report (reports may vary based on instrumentation, patient age and sex)

When ordering tests for which Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement will be sought, physicians should only order tests that are medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of the patient.  Components of the organ or disease panels may be ordered individually.  The diagnostic information must substantiate all tests ordered and must be in the form of an ICD-9 code or its verbal equivalent.
