Applies To: Used as a prognostic indicator for monitoring/management of diabetes mellitus.

Lab: Hematopathology

Request Form: Hematology B

Patient Preparation: None

Collection: Routine venipuncture

Storage Instructions: Store in refrigerator until transported to lab.

Cause For Rejection: Specimen clotted or collected in wrong tube, identification error

Availability: Samples are accepted 24 hours per day at Sample Management, 5.136 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: 24 hours, Monday-Friday

Special Instructions: None

Specimen: Blood

Volume: 3 ml

Container: EDTA (Lavender-top tube preferred; Heparin (Green-top tube) accepted.

Reference Ranges: 4.0 - 6.0%

Test Method: High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)

Interfering Substances: Elevated lipids; some rare abnormal hemoglobins
