HEMOGLOBIN A2 QUANTITATION: (089-3158)

Clinical Indication:

Diagnosis of thalassemia; quantitatively measures Hemoglobin-A2.

Test Mnemonic:

HGBA2

Methodology:

 HPLC ( High Pressure Liquid Chromatography)

Performed:

 Samples are accepted 24 hours per day at Sample Management, 5.136 McCullough.

Turnaround Time:

 24-48 hours; Monday-Friday.

Specimen Requirements:

Collect: Routine venipuncture. PREFERRED: EDTA (lavender- top tube); ACCEPTABLE: Heparin (green-top tube).

Volume: Lavender Tube 4.0 ml or 2 ml. 

 

Minimum Volume:  90% of  Stated tube volume

Storage/Transport:  If not transported to lab <2 hours after collection, store in refrigerator.

Stability: Patient specimens are stable for 7 days when stored at 2-8°C

 

Causes for Rejection: Specimen collected in wrong tube, specimen clotted, identification errors.

Clinical Information:

If applicable, state clinical information that is required to be provided with specimen.

When ordering tests for which Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement will be sought, physicians should only order tests that are medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of the patient.  Components of the organ or disease panels may be ordered individually.  The diagnostic information must substantiate all tests ordered and must be in the form of an ICD-9 code or its verbal equivalent.
