Test Order Mnemonic: HGBA2

Applies to: Diagnosis of thalassemia; quantitatively measures Hemoglobin-A2

Lab: Hematopathology

Request form: Hematology B

Patient preparation: If patient is to receive RBC transfusion, collect before transfusion.

Collection: Routine venipuncture

Storage instructions: If not transported to lab <2 hours after collection, store in refrigerator.

Cause for rejection: Specimen collected in wrong tube, specimen clotted, identification errors.

Availability: Samples are accepted 24 hours per day at Sample Management, 5.136 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: Routine: 24-48 hours; Monday-Friday.

Special Instructions: Order as "Other---Hemoglobin A2" if only test requested

Specimen: Blood

Volume: Pediatric: 1-3 ml ; Adults: 5-10 ml

Container: PREFERRED: EDTA (lavender- top tube); ACCEPTABLE: Heparin (green-top tube).

Reference ranges: 1.3 - 3.3%

Test method: Microchromatography, Densitometry

Interfering substances: Transfusions
