Synonyms: RBC Fragility

CPT 4 Code:  85557

Test Order Mnemonic: RBCFRAG

Applies To: Employed to help diagnose different types of anemia, in which RBC physical properties are altered; helpful in detecting spherocytosis.

Lab: Hematopathology

Request Form: Hematology B

Collection: Routine venipuncture. Specimen must be transported to lab immediately.

Patient Preparation: Patient and normal control must be fasting

Cause For Rejection: Clotted, received in lab in excess of 30 minutes after collection, identification error.

Availability: Samples are accepted 8 AM - 1 PM, Monday-Thursday only, in Hematopathology Lab (5.142 McCullough )

Turnaround Time: 48 hours

Special Instructions: Test must be approved by Hematologist or Pathologist and scheduled with laboratory prior to collection. 1-2 day notice is required. Physician ordering test is responsible for collecting a Normal Control Specimen to be delivered to lab with specimen to be tested (Call lab 409-772-7369).

Volume: 5 ml

Minimum Volume: 3 ml

Container: Heparin (Green-top tube)

Reference Ranges: Interpretation by Hematologist or Pathologist

Test Method: Osmotic Saline Dilutions

Interfering Substances: Hemolysis
