Clinical Indication:

Assess rate of red cell production; effective versus ineffective erythropoiesis.

Test Mnemonic:

Methodology:

 Flow Cytometry.

Performed:

 Samples are accepted 24 hours per day at Sample Management, 5.136 McCullough.

Turnaround Time:

 STATS: 1 hour.  Routine: 4 hours.

Specimen Requirements: Collect: Routine venipuncture. EDTA (Lavender-top tube)

Volume:  1 ml

Minimum Volume: 0.5 ml

Storage/Transport: Unrefrigerated samples accepted up to 12 hours.  Refrigerated accepted up to 24 hours.

Causes for Rejection: Clotted, old specimen, QNS, Identification errors, wrong anticoagulant.

Clinical Information:

If applicable, state clinical information that is required to be provided with specimen.

Reference Range:

By report (reports may vary based on instrumentation, patient age and sex)

Note:

Test Includes: Reticulocyte percent, absolute count, and immature retic fraction (IRF), Reticulated Hemoglobin Content (RET He)

When ordering tests for which Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement will be sought, physicians should only order tests that are medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of the patient.  Components of the organ or disease panels may be ordered individually.  The diagnostic information must substantiate all tests ordered and must be in the form of an ICD-9 code or its verbal equivalent.
