Test Order Mnemonic: SUCHEM

Applies To: Screening Test for Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria (PNH)

Lab: Hematopathology

Request Form: Hematology B

Patient Preparation: If patient is to receive RBC transfusion, collect specimen before transfusion.

Collection: Routine venipuncture. Transport to lab within 3 hours of collection.

Cause For Rejection: Clotted, collected in wrong tube (do not collect in EDTA), transported to lab improperly, hemolyzed, identification errors. See special instructions.

Availability: Samples are accepted 8 AM-3 PM, Monday-Friday, at Sample Management, 5.136 McCullough.

Turnaround Time: 1 hour

Special Instructions: The test can be ordered only once per inpatient admission and once per month for outpatients. Additional requests require the approval of the laboratory director.

Specimen: Blood

Volume: 7 ml

Minimum Volume: 4 ml

Container: Fluoride (Gray top tube).

Reference Range: Negative

Critical Values: Positive. *Recommend confirmation with Acid Serum (HAM's) Test.  Flow cytometry studies are now available for PNH.

Interfering Substances: Hemolysis
